Things That Make My House Feel Like Home (That Cost Almost Nothing)
There’s a quote I’ve always loved:
"People may forget what your home looked like, but they'll never forget how it made them feel."
I don't know who originally said it, but I think about it often.
When people walk into my home, I don't want them to think, "Wow, that's expensive."
I want them to think...
"This feels cozy."
Because to me, home has never been about having the newest furniture or perfectly styled shelves.
It's about creating a space that makes you breathe a little deeper the moment you walk through the door.
The best part?
Most of the things that make my house feel like home cost very little.
Some of them don't cost anything at all.
🌿 I Choose Lamps Over Ceiling Lights
If you've ever been to my house after the sun goes down, you've probably noticed something.
The big overhead lights are almost never on.
Instead, you'll find warm lamps tucked into corners, soft string lights woven through seasonal décor, and the gentle glow of my year-round Christmas tree.
There's just something about soft lighting that instantly makes a room feel calmer.
It's one of the easiest changes you can make, and it completely changes the atmosphere.
THIS is my current favorite LAMP - tucked away in my office that I am currently rearranging! More on that soon!
THESE bulbs will make any room feel warmer, softer and calmer (They’re also dimmable!)
☕ My Favorite Mug Somehow Makes Coffee Taste Better
Tell me I'm not the only one.
I own plenty of mugs, but there are always one or two that I reach for over and over again.
Maybe it's because they're oversized.
Maybe it's because they remind me of a certain season.
Maybe it's because they just feel right in my hands.
Whatever the reason, little rituals like that make ordinary mornings feel special.
And honestly, I think we need more of that.
THIS White Mocha Syrup is my GO TO for all things coffee!
🎶 I Always Have Something Playing
Silence has its place.
But most days, my house has a soundtrack.
Sometimes it's instrumental music while I work.
Sometimes it's an audiobook.
Sometimes it's the same playlist I've had on repeat for weeks.
Sometimes it’s a rerun of a sitcom that hasn’t aired since the early 2000s.
It isn't loud.
It's just enough to make the house feel lived in.
Comfort isn't always something you see.
Sometimes it's something you hear.
🌸 Fresh Flowers Aren't Just for Special Occasions
One of my favorite little luxuries is grabbing a bouquet from the grocery store.
Nothing extravagant.
Just flowers.
Sometimes I split one bouquet into several little vases around the house.
It's amazing how something so simple can brighten an entire room.
And if fresh flowers aren't in the budget?
Faux florals can create that same cheerful feeling year-round.
As someone who decorates with florals constantly, I can confidently say they never go out of style.
I am a frequent 3/$12 flowers buyer from Publix.
🍋 I Decorate for the Season I'm In
If you've been following along for a while, this one probably doesn't surprise you.
I love seasonal decorating.
Not because I feel like I have to.
Because it genuinely makes me happy.
Right now, my home is filled with lemons, butterflies, pink blooms, and bees thanks to my Pink Lemonade Summer Tree.
Before long, those lemons will give way to pumpkins.
Then Christmas.
Then something completely different.
Decorating with the seasons gives me something to look forward to.
It reminds me that life keeps moving, and every season has something beautiful to offer.
If you haven't seen this year's tree yet, you can read all about it here.
🛋️ Blankets Aren't Just for Winter
I don't care if it's July in Florida.
There is almost always a cozy blanket within arm's reach somewhere in my house.
They're practical, yes.
But they also make a space feel inviting.
There's something about seeing a soft throw draped over the arm of a chair that quietly says...
"Come sit for a while."
& If you haven’t ever snuggled up in a Vera Bradley throw blanket, you’re missing out - they are truly my favorite!
📷 Display Your Memories
One of my favorite things about being a photographer is getting to preserve memories.
The only thing better than taking those photos?
Actually printing them.
Our phones are full of thousands of moments we'll probably never look at again.
Print your favorites.
Frame them.
Let your walls remind you of the people and memories you love most.
A home should tell your story.
🐾 Little Things Make the Biggest Difference
Some of my favorite parts of my home weren't expensive purchases.
They're the things that make it feel like my home.
The cats curled up in their favorite sunny spot.
A candle burning while I work.
My comfort sweatshirt hanging on the back of a chair.
The Christmas tree that never really comes down.
Fresh coffee brewing in the morning.
The tiny routines that quietly make everyday life feel a little softer.
Those are the things I remember.
Not how perfectly I decorated a shelf.
Home Doesn't Have to Be Perfect
Social media has made it easy to believe every home should look like a magazine.
Perfectly styled.
Perfectly clean.
Perfectly color-coordinated.
Mine isn't.
Some days there are boxes sitting by the door waiting to be shipped.
Sometimes my desk is covered in camera gear.
There are usually cat toys scattered somewhere.
And honestly?
That's okay.
A home doesn't have to be perfect to feel peaceful.
Final Thoughts
The older I get, the less I care about having the trendiest home.
What I care about is how my home makes me feel.
Comfort.
Peace.
Joy.
Those things can't always be bought.
They're created.
One cozy lamp.
One favorite mug.
One blanket.
One bouquet of flowers.
One decorated corner at a time.
Because in the end...
Home isn't about impressing people.
It's about creating a place you're excited to come back to every single day.
Here's to creating homes that feel lived in, loved, and unapologetically you.
Until next time,
Sincerely,
Skye 💚
